If you were riding as third class, you were put in steerage. Before boarding the ship, third class passengers had to be inspected for diseases and infections so it would not spread to the upper classes. Third class was the only class with automatic flushing toilets because they were believed to be unfamiliar with the understanding of regular flushing. Third class consisted of a smoking room, a general room, and cabins that had berths, usually 4-6, which were shared with other passengers. None of the third class cabins included the button to call stewards to attention. 1 steward would tend to 14 passengers, in which the stewards would go visit the cabins at certain times each day. Men were put into the front of the boat and women were put into the back of the boat. Third class passengers only had one course unlike the other classes. Today the cost of a third class ticket would be $700andchildren's tickets would be $300. When the Titanic was hit, third class suffered the greatest amount of deaths because they were the hardest hit by the disaster.
